Mouth-watering and Helpful Cake Recipes for Any OccasionFeb 26, 2010 This is a great cake-baking cookbook for anyone. Already an experienced baker? No problem - use the recipes and skip the author's detailed tips and instructions... No experience baking cakes? Not a problem either - start at the beginning of the book and follow the detailed instructions and tips. The recipes and techniques do seem to get more advanced as you work through the book, but even as an occasional baker, I didn't have any problems following the instructions when making the "Heaven and Hell" cake for a relative's birthday. (This cake is wonderful! It is a combination of angel food and devil's food cakes, with a peanut butter mouse filling and chocolate ganache frosting... simply mouth-watering!)
I will admit that I wanted my Heaven and Hell cake to look just like the authors, and it was pretty close... but I should have believed her when she said that you didn't need to make the full cake and that you might want to make a smaller version. Even with a dinner table full of guests, the cake was so rich and yummy that a small piece was enough - and we had plenty of left over cake! So... lesson learned... pay a little more attention to the author's notes. :)
Overall, I am really enjoying this cookbook, both the authors coversational tone when talking about each cake, as well as the detailed instructions that accompany each recipe. Possibly the best part of the book are the pictures! They give you a wonderful look at the actual cakes and show you just how wonderful they turn out - I just wish there were more!
I love this book and plan to make many, MANY more cakes!

Taking on the challenge...Feb 22, 2010 My hubby got this book for me last month and so far I have made 6 cakes. I decided that I was going to follow the book and make 1 cake a week. Everyone that I have shared the cakes with have raved about them and can't wait taste the next cake that I'll make.
The recipes so far are very tasty and the anecdotes are interesting. I'll update this as I go along to see if I still feel the same way about them.
This is where I'm posting about my baking adventures:

A recommendation for any cookery collectionFeb 20, 2010 ALL CAKES CONSIDERED tells of a woman who every Monday brings a different cake to the office for her colleagues at NPR to enjoy. Hers are never made with a cake mix, no canned frosting creations and these directions offer an extensive cake variety perfect for any who would learn to hone baking skills and produce exceptional results. Color photos abound in a recommendation for any cookery collection.
Very WashingtonianFeb 17, 2010 I often bake goodies for the folks at work. I wasn't sure if this would be just another cookbook. But it was pretty neat. The layout with a vintage 40s or 50s style was nice. I liked the photo of the traveling cake container on the metro! Most importantly I think I can get some new recipes to try out. But the extras are better than I expected. If I had time, I'd probably enjoy sitting down and reading all it has to offer.
Considering All Cakes ConsideredFeb 09, 2010 You're going to want to read this book cover to cover! Although it's a "period" piece with its colloquial language, that makes it even more fun. Melissa Gray of NPR baked a different cake every week to take to the NPR staff. She used family recipes, as well as recipes from church cookbooks and even out-of-print cookbooks. Ms. Gray also wrote about the chemistry of cake baking and included useful information about ingredients, equipment, and utensils. Personally, I enjoyed the book because it was so much fun--reading about the reactions of her tasters and their personal preferences, learning about the personalities of the NPR staff, and hearing her tell family stories. Bravo to Melissa Gray for her writing, as well as baking, skills!
