Coolio, Cookin' with Coolio: 5 Star Meals at a 1 Star Price (Atria, 2009)
I'm sure at least half the audience looked at this book when it first came out and had the exact same thought I did: "are you [freakin'] kidding me?". The difference is that when I have that thought, a book goes onto my must-read-as-soon-as-possible pile, and so I ended up grabbing this one from the library last week and giving it the good old once-over. And while it doesn't quite fulfill the promise of its subtitle, Cookin' with Coolio is pretty darned awesome.
This is a cookbook geared towards people who have never cooked before (or only know how to make pasta), so the recipes, in general, are basic. This is not in any way a bad thing. Still, Coolio mixes it up a time or two and encourages his readers to get out of the traditional mindset on occasion (peanut butter chicken? Awesome!).
I say it doesn't quite live up to the promise of its subtitle because every once in a while he tosses in an ingredient that you're not going to be able to pick up for a buck ninety-nine at the corner store. You won't find any saffron in these recipes, but the occasional balsamic vinegar, sprinkling of pomegranate seeds, or the like shows up. All of the more expensive ingredients are good stuff, and I agree with the gangsta that every cook should have balsamic vinegar in his arsenal, but a novice who picks up one of those $3.99 bottles may be put off the stuff for life; you're gonna drop fifteen bucks on a bottle that rates only half-decent (and I live in a place with a much lower cost of living than Los Angeles). You can make most of the recipes in this book, complete, for that price. But other than that minor quibble, this is definitely one to pick up for the novice chefs. (It should go without saying it's not one for the kiddies, thanks to his liberal use of profanity... but then, if they're listening to his songs, they're probably used to it, so buy away!). *** ½

I have to say, this cookbook would make the perfect gag gift for the would-be chef in your life. It is the funniest cookbook I've ever read, bar none. As for the recipes themselves? They are hit or miss. I've tried out about ten of them so far, and my family only truly liked three of them. A couple were so bad we couldn't even finish our plates. But don't let that keep you from buying this as a fun birthday or Christmas gift for somebody special. I've already purchased two copies for family members, and I'll probably end up purchasing a couple more. The humor makes this book well worth the relatively cheap price tag, and while you're laughing you might even stumble upon a recipe your family really enjoys.
A surprisingly useful cookbook!May 14, 2010
Coolio is certainly a charismatic presence. His web show of the same title is definitely amazing and definitely not suitable for children. His cookbook is much the same. The recipes inside aren't revolutionary--this is not a cookbook for someone who wants to try something completely different. This is a book that he compiled with a good chef friend based on recipes that he, himself, likes to cook. Having not grown up a millionaire in the south of France, these recipes are truly ghetto gourmet. They're cheap to make, easy to put together, and you can eat most of them pretty successfully with ranch dressing.
This isn't a bad thing! The food in this book is completely unpretentious and accessible to people who don't have money to spend on gourmet ingredients, don't have time to spend more than an hour or so getting dinner together, and don't have the know-how to neatly bone a duck. And the food inside is pretty good!
The writing is completely in line with Coolio's public persona. He measures spices in dime bags and peppers the recipe with SHAKA ZULU at every available opportunity. This might normally tip the cookbook into the realm of novelty, but since the recipes within are perfectly legitimate, the book itself escapes becoming a vehicle for the writer's personality. It's a fun book, remarkably well-written and put together, and it would actually be a pretty good investment for a beginner cook or someone who just wants to expand his or her cheap cooking options.

Amazon won't stop harassing me for this review, so here it is. The book arrived promptly, in as good condition as was advertised (used book). Now I hope Amazon will leave me alone.
