 A Fun Cook Book for a Novice ChefMar 06, 2010
Oh, Coolio, you took us on a Fantastic Voyage to the Gangsta's Paradise. And know you have Sumpin' New, a cook book. Yes, as the back cover says, "There's only one thing that Coolio's been doing longer than rapping: cooking." Cookin' with Coolio promises "5 star meals at a 1 star price." The cook book is really for novices that have never bought one before but what something easy that is you can get a chuckle while cooking (Coolio instruct you to do such things like "2 eggs, beaten like a red-headed stepchild" for his Kompton Fried Chicken). All you cooking needs are here including appetizers, salads, poultry, streak, (It's Hard Out Here for a) shrimp, pasta, dessert, and even meals for Vegetarians. A perfect gift for any bachelor in his twenties or thirties who thinks cooking is opening up a can of SpaghettiO's to get them to learn how to cook real meals from a blast from the past.
Not Your Grandma's CookbookFeb 26, 2010
Well I have to say this cookbook took me a little by surprise. I received it through the Amazon Vine program and I can't say I had any real expectations. When I began to flip through it I was a little startled though amused at the some of the language and euphamisims but simultanesouly impressed by the recipes themselves.
Mostly comfort food recipes with some more gourmet fare sprinkled throughout. The instructions are clear and concise, and the descriptions are funny and colorful. I wouldn't give this to my mother but my sister would definetly enjoy it!
COOKING'WITH COOLIO - WTH?Jan 25, 2010
This book caught my eye as I passed by the table of various cookbooks at the local bookstore. My first thought was `cooking with Coolio' - WTH? Coolio was a lackluster rapper back in the day, what could he teach me about cooking. As I thumbed through the book, the spices used along with food combinations really captured my attention. I read the book on the drive home from out of town and my husband had a stop twice as I was laughing so hard I almost wet my pants. The terms he uses and references are over the top but funny as he!!. Actually the thought of Coolio cooking is hilarious but what I didn't know was that he has a highly rated internet cooking show...who knew?
Many may find the some of the examples and wording offensive while several of the recipes wouldn't go over well for my family - crybaby chicken (too many hot peppers);drunk-ass chicken (way too much liquor) and hot fruit sandwich (fruit stacked on bread - no way)...but if you get over that the laughs alone will keep you entertained. Discover the Ghetto Gourmet, how to become a kitchen pimp, and how to make sinful steaks. You will learn how to make "pasta like a rasta", "sweet treats for that sweet a$$" and seafood in the chapter titled "it's hard out here for a shrimp". Change your measurements from - pinch to a peench; tablespoon to a dime bag; and combine to coagulate. Reading through the "ten cool-mandments" and the quotes from Jarez Sez will surely make you change the way you look at the kitchen. After trying a few recipes, the combinations were brilliant (chili mac pimpi; popcorn steak; high-flyin', stir-fryin' vegan vegetables; and Jarez make-it-rain peanut butter cookies. Rachael Ray, Martha Stewart and Bobby Flay should watch their backs cause the Ghetto Gourmet is on the attack...

I am the first to admit that I bought this book for the novelty factor, I mean, really? A rapping chef? In a word: yes! I do not own a single rap recording in any format, but as someone who values good and simple to prepare food, this cookbook is platinum. The book contains 76 recipes, and some of them are absolute standouts. "Kung Fu Chicken" (p. 51), "Crybaby Chicken" (p. 62), "Karate Meat" (p. 96), "Magical Fruit Soup" (p. 174), and "Bro-Ghetti" (p. 158) top my personal list of favorites.
The book is irreverent, is full of colorful and innuendo-laden language (not for kids), and does have a few idiosyncrasies, e.g. "dime bag" stands in for "tablespoon", etc. All of this is explained in chapters one and two. The book isn't big on illustrations, other than a very nice color insert section of completed dishes, and it doesn't go into great detail on techniques, rather gives simple, easy to follow directions. There are inserts from Coolio's assistant, Jarez, in the recipes giving useful and funny information (his advice on p. 75 regarding the advisability of drinking marinade is especially insightful and entertaining).
The introductions to the recipes, the recipes themselves, and even the ingredient lists are well seasoned with humor: "Crybaby Chicken" requires among other things three kinds of peppers and a box of tissues, while his vegetarian chili requires a fire extinguisher. Some of his more unusual recipes need a little explanation. As an example, his recipe "Peanut Butter Chicken Love" has this to say by way of introduction: "Chicken and peanut butter may seem like a strange combination, but they go together like gin and juice, biscuits and gravy, O.J. and prison", while the more conventional (but delicious) "Chilly Beany" explains that "I always liked chili, but I never really 'needed' it until I got stuck in a snowstorm in Moscow. I had just done a show and was hungrier than a model in Paris and colder than Ted Williams's frozen head."
It's been a while since I have seen so many simple yet genuinely good dishes in a single cookbook: there may be only 76 recipes here, but a very high proportion of them are home runs. I recommend this book for adults with a sense of humor and a love of cooking.

 Okay if you like the rap humor, but recipes fall shortDec 25, 2009
I love to cook but am always up for new approaches so grabbed this book hoping for some interesting insights from someone I wouldn't think of as a cook first. What I found was mostly just a book that took fairly basic recipes and inserted a lot of rap humor and language (i.e. not for kids!) The recipes were easy enough if a bit frustrating for having silly measurements such as "dime bag?" for what supposedly would be a pinch of seasoning. Needless to say you won't find many baking recipes in here! There's very few illustrations of the food (just a few slides in the center of the book) which is something I always miss when left out. I see this mainly as a gift for a male or college friend that isn't much of a cook, but you'll have to know whether they are okay with the language and sexual innuendos you'll find in here. The problem is the book is just not very comprehensive in terms of a wide range of recipes and has a lack of basic cooking instruction as well, so it seems to have a pretty limited target audience, that at least knows something about cooking, but not so much that they won't find these recipes too basic.
