Cookbook is compiled in a strange way. The cookbook is written as a narrative and the recipes are sort of haphazardly strewn about (in relation to the narrative). Interesting concept but difficult to hash out menu ideas.
Tried a couple of recipes from the text and the flavors were completely off. Perhaps this is his spin on classic Greek but I don't know anyone on this planet who uses shallot or white distilled vinegar in a Tzatziki.
I am a little disappointed in this text.

I've made 5 recipes from this book, and all have been a disappointment. The recipes read well, but are over-elaborate and don't taste as good as simpler recipes I've made.
I did enjoy the family stories, but expected the family style dishes to be special. They're not.
My favorite Greek cookbook, stories and recipes is "The Olive and the Caper". Try that instead.

I bought this for my husband who loves lamb...there are count them 3 lamb recipes that are not that inviting...It is being sent back.

A great memoir, a problematic cookbookDec 12, 2009
Michael Psilakis is clearly passionate about Greek cooking. As a memoir and a passionate advocacy of Greek cooking, this book is wonderful. You will want to eat and cook his food.
The problems come with the recipes. He decided to cover the gamut in terms of difficulty and complexity, and this makes the book somewhat frustrating. There's a good chunk of recipes any competent cook can prepare; another chunk that a more experienced cook could prepare with preparation and planning; and a final chunk that only the most experienced cooks will or should attempt. Most of us will not be able to roast a lamb in our back yard (the recipe helpfully includes the equipment necessary, such as clamps) or attempt most of the recipes in the Anthos chapter (no food dehydrator for the feta? Sorry!) There's nothing wrong with publishing recipes that aren't really fit for the home kitchen; Heston Blumenthal has a whole book of them. But future purchasers should know exactly what it is they're buying.
The recipe writing is also uneven. Instructions are sometimes one step above the shorthand I use when writing a recipe down for myself; if you're an experienced cook you should have no problem reading between the lines, but a beginner may have problems. "Pan roast the onions" is fine when you've done it before, but inadequate for someone who has not. Some instructions are imprecise ("heat the oil for deep frying to 325-350F") or badly edited (one pasta recipe calls for separated eggs; the instructions tell you what to do with the yolks, but the whites are not mentioned again).
Overall, it's a good book that just doesn't feel quite as focused as it could be.

My Review: I have never owned a greek cookbook and other than making my own chickpea hummus, I have never cooked Greek food. I did not grow up with Greek food. I have never been to a Greek restaurant. I believe this cookbook could change my cooking habits. I believe the recipes from this cookbook could find their way onto my table.
This book should be viewed as a resource for Greek food and recipes. Every cook should have this book included in their arsenal. This is an excellent reference for original Greek recipes with a modern twist.
I have to admit, I was intimidated by this book at first glance. It is a large book with overwhelming ingredient lists and hard to find items. Would a working mother really have time to shop and cook these recipes for her family? I will tell you honestly that some of these recipes are far too advanced for my family. The Poached Halibut with Cypriot Shellfish Salad, Cucumber-Yogurt Broth & Caviar has 49 ingredients including sheep's milk yogurt, live razor clams and sturgeon caviar. I don't think my local Kroger will be able to accommodate. I bring this up not in a negative way but to keep your expectations in check. This is not your casual Food Network recipe book. This book is about so much more than Greek food. It is about culture, family, traditions and the spirit of Greece.
What I am planning for my table: Spanakopita, Dried Fruit Salad with Thyme-Honey Vinaigrette and Grilled Watermelon & Grilled Manouri (yes, I had to google the word "Manouri").
